You leave an unfinished email to open a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is now in front of you, but part of your mind is still composing the email: Did that sentence sound too blunt? Was there something else you needed to add?
That mental carryover is the basic idea behind attention residue. When you switch tasks, especially before the first one feels complete, attention does not always move as cleanly or as quickly as the cursor on your screen.
You may have technically moved on while a piece of the previous task is still taking up mental space. That matters because the next task has to compete with work you thought you had already left behind.

What Is Attention Residue?
The term comes from research by Sophie Leroy on what happens when people move between work tasks.
In two experiments published in 2009, Leroy found that people had difficulty fully transferring their attention to a new task when the previous task was unfinished.
Some attention remained mentally tied to the first task.
That leftover attention was associated with poorer performance on the next task.
The useful idea is simple:
Changing tasks does not guarantee that your attention changes tasks at the same speed.
Attention Residue Is Not the Same as Being Distracted
Distraction usually refers to something pulling you away from the task you intend to do.
Attention residue refers to what can remain after the switch.
For example:
You are writing a report.
A colleague asks you a question.
You answer.
You return to the report.
The interruption is over.
But your mind may still be processing the conversation.
That lingering mental activity is closer to attention residue.
Why Unfinished Tasks Are Especially Sticky
Unfinished work creates open questions.
- What was I going to do next?
- Did I make the right decision?
- Will I remember to finish this?
- What if something goes wrong while I am away?
When you switch away without a clear stopping point, your brain has more to preserve.
Leroy’s research found that residue was particularly difficult when people had to leave a task before completing it.
The mind keeps part of the previous goal active.
That can make it harder to give the next task your full attention.
Task Switching Has a Cost Even Without Attention Residue
Attention residue is one part of a larger task-switching problem.
Decades of cognitive research show a switch cost: responses are typically slower and often more error-prone immediately after changing from one task to another.
Stephen Monsell’s 2003 review described how switching requires the brain to reconfigure the mental rules, goals and responses relevant to the new task.
Preparation can reduce this cost.
It does not eliminate it completely.
That matters because people often talk about switching as if it were instantaneous.
It is not.
Why Multitasking Often Feels Faster Than It Is
Multitasking feels productive because many things appear to be moving.
You answer a message.
Update the document.
Check email.
Return to the meeting notes.
Open the spreadsheet.
Nothing is completely stalled.
But progress is not the same as efficiency.

Each switch introduces:
- a change in goal,
- a change in context,
- a need to remember where you were,
- a need to suppress the previous task,
- a need to activate the next task.
That overhead is easy to miss because it happens mentally rather than visibly.
What Is a Resumption Lag?
Researchers who study interruptions often use the term resumption lag.
It refers to the time needed to restart the primary task after an interruption ends.
You return to the document.
But before you can continue, you may need to:
- find your place,
- remember your previous goal,
- reconstruct what you were thinking,
- decide what comes next.
That rebuilding period is part of the cost of interruption.

Experiments by Trafton and colleagues found that giving people a brief moment to prepare before an interruption could help them resume the original task more efficiently.
Later studies have also shown that longer interruptions can increase the time needed to resume.
There Is No Universal “20-Minute Rule”
You may have seen claims that it always takes a fixed number of minutes to recover after an interruption.
The science is more complicated.
Recovery time depends on:
- the complexity of the task,
- how deeply you were engaged,
- what interrupted you,
- how long the interruption lasted,
- whether the original task was finished,
- whether you left yourself a cue for returning.
So it is better to think in terms of switching and resumption costs than to treat one popular number as a universal law.

Why Email Creates So Much Attention Residue
Email is a perfect residue machine.
You open one message while doing something else.
Now the message contains:
- a decision,
- a request,
- a social tone to interpret,
- a future action,
- maybe a problem you cannot solve immediately.
You close the inbox.
But the message does not necessarily leave your mind.
This is why “just checking email” during deep work can be more disruptive than the minute or two it takes on the clock.
Why Meetings Can Leave Residue Too
A meeting ends at 10:00.
Your next task starts at 10:01.
Your calendar says the transition took one minute.
Your mind may disagree.
If the meeting included unresolved decisions, disagreement, new responsibilities or emotional tension, those thoughts can follow you into the next task.
A calendar can schedule back-to-back activities.
Attention does not always transition back-to-back so cleanly.
Can You Prevent Attention Residue Completely?
Probably not.
Switching is part of modern work and life.
You will be interrupted.
You will need to change tasks.
The goal is not zero switching.
The goal is to make transitions cleaner.

How to Reduce Attention Residue
1. Finish a small unit before switching
If you cannot finish the whole task, finish a meaningful sub-step.
For example:
- finish the paragraph,
- complete the calculation,
- send the draft,
- write the final bullet point.
A clear stopping point gives the mind less unresolved structure to carry forward.
2. Write down the exact next step
Before switching, leave yourself a note:
Next: compare the final two options and write the recommendation.
This reduces the need to keep the next step active in working memory.
You do not have to mentally rehearse it.
The note remembers for you.
3. Capture unresolved thoughts
If something from the previous task keeps looping, write it down.
For example:
- question to ask,
- decision still open,
- person to contact,
- risk to check later.
Externalizing the thought does not guarantee it disappears.
But it removes one reason to keep rehearsing it.
4. Add a transition minute
Do not schedule every task edge-to-edge if you can avoid it.
Use one or two minutes to:
- close the previous task,
- write the next step,
- clear irrelevant windows,
- state the goal of the next task.
A short transition is often more useful than pretending no transition is needed.
5. Batch shallow tasks
Email, messages and small admin tasks create many switches.
Instead of spreading them throughout the day, group them.
For example:
11:00–11:30 → messages and email.
15:30–16:00 → admin and follow-ups.
This reduces the number of times deep work has to be reconstructed.
6. Protect tasks with high resumption costs
Some tasks are easy to restart.
Others are not.
A simple calendar check may recover quickly.
A complicated analysis, article, design or programming task may require much more context.
The harder a task is to rebuild, the more aggressively it deserves protection from interruption.
7. Turn off alerts during deep work
If notifications are forcing the switches, remove the trigger.

8. Separate communication from creation
Communication is reactive.
Creation is often context-heavy.
Trying to do both continuously can create a day full of mental leftovers.
When possible, create distinct periods for:
- writing,
- analysis,
- study,
- communication,
- administration.
A Simple “Clean Switch” Routine
Before changing tasks, take 60 seconds.
- Write what you just completed.
- Write the exact next step.
- Capture any unresolved thought.
- Close the tabs or files you no longer need.
- Write the goal of the next task in one sentence.
Then switch.
This will not eliminate every trace of the previous task.
It gives your attention a cleaner handoff.
How to Recover After an Interruption
If you have already been interrupted, do not immediately start clicking around trying to “get back into it.”
Pause for a few seconds and reconstruct deliberately.
Ask:
- What was I doing?
- What was the goal?
- What had I already decided?
- What is the next action?
This is essentially a resumption cue.
You are helping the previous task goal become active again.
Does Taking Breaks Cause Attention Residue?
Not necessarily.
A deliberate break is different from switching into another cognitively demanding task.
Walking, stretching or getting water does not always create a competing work goal.
Opening email often does.
The type of break matters.
If your “break” introduces ten new messages, three decisions and a social conversation, it may not feel like a clean break when you return.

You read for five minutes.
Check messages.
Return to the chapter.
Open another tab.
Return again.
The book remains open for an hour.
But the hour is composed of many small cognitive starts.
That makes deep comprehension harder than the clock suggests.
Attention Residue at Work
Modern knowledge work creates natural residue:
- back-to-back meetings,
- chat notifications,
- email,
- multiple projects,
- urgent requests,
- shared documents.
This is not only an individual self-control problem.
Teams can reduce residue by creating:
- meeting buffers,
- quiet hours,
- clear urgency channels,
- fewer unnecessary notifications,
- protected focus periods.
