The most influential framework is Attention Restoration Theory (ART), developed by Rachel and Stephen Kaplan.
ART proposes that directed attention—the kind of attention you deliberately use to stay on a task, ignore distractions and follow a goal—can become fatigued.
Some environments may help restore that capacity because they hold attention gently rather than constantly demanding effortful control.
Nature is the classic example.

A newer 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis included 80 studies and 273 individual outcomes. Nature exposure was associated with greater cognitive restoration than non-nature conditions overall, but the average effects were small and heterogeneous. Working memory and attentional control showed the clearest reliable benefits.
That is a much better summary than “nature instantly fixes your focus.”
Nature appears to help some attention-related functions, but the size of the benefit varies by person, task and type of exposure.
How Long Do You Need to Spend in Nature?
There is no universal “correct” dose.
But the 2025 meta-analysis found that exposure duration influenced results, with the largest average difference between natural and non-natural conditions appearing around 30 minutes.
That does not mean 29 minutes does nothing and 30 minutes suddenly works.
It simply suggests that very short exposure may not always be enough for measurable restoration, while longer exposure is not automatically better.

A 2024 randomized controlled trial with 92 participants compared a 40-minute nature walk with a 40-minute urban walk.
The researchers measured attention before and after the walks and also recorded EEG activity.
The nature group showed changes in a neural signal related to executive control that were not seen in the urban group.
A related 2024 randomized trial using resting EEG found that the urban walk appeared to place greater demands on executive attention, while the nature condition was consistent with reduced attentional strain.
These findings do not mean scientists have fully explained the mechanism.
They do suggest that the difference between “a break outside” and “a break in nature” may be more than subjective preference.
4. Nature May Help More When You Are Already Mentally Tired
If you are fresh and focused, there may be less to restore.
The 2025 meta-analysis found that nature benefits tended to be larger among participants who had undergone cognitive fatigue before the exposure.
That makes intuitive sense.
A restorative environment may matter most when attention has already been heavily taxed.

5. Real Nature May Be More Restorative Than Virtual Nature
Nature videos and images can still be pleasant.

A 2023 preregistered study examining natural-scenery videos found that virtual nature did not consistently reproduce the working-memory restoration associated with real nature exposure.
So if you have access to a real park, garden, waterfront or quiet tree-lined street, use it.
If you do not, natural imagery may still be worth trying—but treat it as an alternative, not a guaranteed substitute.

I need a break.
