In everyday language, a short attention span usually means difficulty staying engaged with one task for as long as you want or need to.

That may look like:

  • losing your place while reading,
  • switching tasks every few minutes,
  • checking your phone during slow moments,
  • missing parts of conversations,
  • struggling to finish long or repetitive tasks,
  • feeling mentally restless when nothing changes for a while.

But attention is not one single process.

Researchers distinguish between related abilities such as:

  • sustained attention — staying engaged over time,
  • selective attention — prioritizing relevant information,
  • orienting — shifting attention toward something,
  • executive control — managing conflict and competing goals.

That number is often repeated as if attention were a single measurable countdown.

Many other factors can affect concentration:

  • stress,
  • anxiety,
  • depression,
  • medication effects,
  • physical illness,
  • environmental distraction.

If 60 minutes feels impossible, begin with 15 or 20.

  • browser tabs,
  • noise.

3. Make the task concrete

Replace:

“Focus on work.”
