You sit down to do something ordinary.
But your mind is still in the meeting. Or the argument. Or the deadline. Or the unanswered message.
You can see the document in front of you, yet part of your attention keeps scanning somewhere else.
That is one reason stress can make concentration feel unusually difficult.
Stress does not simply “turn off” attention. In the short term, it can shift attention toward whatever feels urgent, important or threatening. That may be useful in a genuine emergency. It becomes a problem when the thing you need to focus on is not the thing your stress system keeps prioritizing.

How to Concentrate When You Are Stressed
The goal is not to force yourself into calm before doing anything.
The goal is to reduce enough competing demand that one task can become dominant again.
1. Write down the stressor before trying to ignore it
If the mind keeps returning to one problem, externalize it.
Write:
- what happened,
- what you can control,
- what you need to do later.
This does not solve the stressor.
It gives the brain a place to stop rehearsing it.
2. Define one next action
Stress and vagueness are a bad combination.
Replace:
Fix the project.
with:
Open the spreadsheet and verify the first ten rows.
Clear actions reduce decision-making.
3. Reduce the number of open loops
If you cannot resolve every problem, at least stop exposing yourself to all of them continuously.
Close:
- email,
- team chat,
- news,
- unrelated tabs.
Stress already creates internal competition.

If forty-five minutes feels impossible, do not turn the day into a test of character.

- 10 minutes,
- 15 minutes,

On a high-stress day, choose work that matches the state.
If possible:
- do routine admin when broad creativity feels difficult,
- delay major strategic decisions if you are highly activated,
- double-check detail-heavy work,
- use checklists.
You are not giving up.
You are reducing error risk.

Recovery is not always passive.

The relationship is context-dependent, not a simple straight line.

- persists for weeks or months,
